Given the size of the World Trade Center and the magnitude of the disaster, the exact number of victims may never be known with certainty. However, according to the most recent figures from the New York Times (April 24, 2002), "Officials estimate that as of yesterday, 3,066 people had died, or were missing and presumed dead, as a result of the attacks on Sept. 11, including the 19 hijackers.

AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER
2,833 dead or missing, with 157 dead on two hijacked planes (92 on American Airlines flight 11 and 65 on United Airlines flight 175) 128 missing 974 death certificates issued by medical examiner's office 1721 death certificates issued at request of families in cases in which remains have not been identified.

AT THE PENTAGON
189 dead or missing, with 64 dead on hijacked plane (American Airlines flight 77).

IN PENNSYLVANIA
44 dead on hijacked plane (United Airlines Flight 93).

According to the Twin Towers Fund, there were 343 FDNY/EMS workers, 23 NYPD workers, 34 Port Authority Police workers, and 3 Court Officers who died at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2002.

The New York City Department of Health released the demographics of the World Trade Center victims based on the death certificates that have been filed. This article is from the New York Times:
